Huntleigh Healthcare wins at the Cardiff Business Awards 2020

Huntleigh is delighted to have been named a winner at the sixth annual Cardiff Business Awards, held recently in a virtual ceremony hosted by Jamie Owen.

The Cardiff-based company was among 46 companies to be named finalists in this year’s highly anticipated awards, which celebrate the best businesses in Cardiff and the vast potential that exists within the capital city of Wales.

Huntleigh was named winner in the Innovation Business of the Year category.

With a long history of innovation, Huntleigh has become a recognised global player in the design, manufacture and distribution of medical technology. The company houses two distinct product categories within its portfolio: Fetal & Patient Monitoring and Vascular Assessment & Wound Care. The latter provided the accolades for the award with our most recent innovation WoundExpress , a device that a patients can use at home to assist in the healing of lower leg ulcers.

The NHS manages an estimated 278,000 venous leg ulcers (VLUs) every year, of which 47% (130,660), do not heal within 12 months. These wounds are both painful and uncomfortable for the patient and expensive for health authorities (community nurse visits take a lot of time and make up a large part of the cost).

WoundExpress provides an effective solution - improving patient care and reducing the requirement for nurse visits, therefore enabling them to support a wider variety of patient groups. Developed in collaboration with University Hospital of Wales (UHW) and the Welsh Wound Innovation Centre (WWIC), our new, unique device uses Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (IPC) away from the wound site to increase blood flow around the leg ulcer. This aids early healing, even on some of the most long lasting and challenging wounds clinicians can face.

Speaking about the award, Greg Baily, Technical Director at Huntleigh said “
It’s fantastic to be recognised in this year’s Cardiff Business Awards. Many years of development and growth have been behind Huntleigh’s success, allowing investment in significant innovations which we believe will not only be good for the health of the business, but also the population. This award comes on the back of the release of our latest product for healing chronic lower limb wounds – a debilitating and life changing condition. This product has already begun to transform sufferers’ lives while presenting a cost benefit to care givers and it’s been a privilege for me to be part of this journey”.

Now in their sixth year, the awards recognised those companies and individuals who have enjoyed impressive success over the last year and have made an outstanding contribution both to their respective sectors and to the wider Cardiff economy itself.

The main sponsor for the awards is Cardiff Council, and Cllr Huw Thomas, Leader of Cardiff Council said:
While this year’s awards have taken place in a very difficult environment for business, we have been delighted with the range and quality of the applications.  Amongst the winners, there are well established businesses in the city and a new generation of technology companies who will be making their mark in the economy over the years ahead. As a Council we look forward to working with all the businesses and helping them to grow and prosper in our capital city .”

The Cardiff Business Awards were supported by headline sponsors Cardiff Council, with other sponsors including; AMPLYFI, Bluegg, Box UK, Cardiff and Vale College, Cardiff Metropolitan University, Cleartech Live, CPS Group (UK), Development Bank of Wales, Dragon Taxis, LexisNexis Risk Solutions, Towergate Insurance Brokers and United Purpose.

Leg Club are proud to be a LCIP Stakeholder Being able to understand the needs of the people we are here to help is vital to the service we provide. Exploring an individual’s perception of their problems, demonstrating a deeper understanding of their health status and recognising the impact on their lives of living with a leg wound, provides Leg Club Industry Partners (LCIP) with new and important information. Involving members (patients) as stakeholders ensures that their views, experiences and interests are central to LCIP relationship. The Leg Club members’ (patients’) views need to be heard within all levels of government if the NHS is to be responsive to their needs. Only they can understand the day-to-day realities of their condition and are best placed to decide what form of wound/compression management can help them to manage pain, remain independent and enjoy a better quality of life, enhancing the relevance of outcome measures in terms of the lived experience. The LCIP provides support both to the clinical team and members through company representatives visits. Being able to understand their needs and then discuss directly with the healthcare industry, helps to keep members’ views at the forefront of wound/compression development. We are proud to be a stakeholder of the LCIP, which, through regular engagement with clinicians, commissioners, public bodies and parliamentarians seeks to improve understanding of the views of Leg Club members, ensuring they are factored into NHS and policy decisions.

Huntleigh presented the Queen's Award for Innovation HUNTLEIGH HEALTHCARE – A Member of the Arjo family It was another proud day for all staff at Huntleigh in Cardiff last week as we welcomed local dignitaries, customers and networking partners from across the UK to join us for our official Queen’s Award Presentation Ceremony. Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of South Glamorgan, Morfudd Meredith who formally presented the award to Huntleigh said, “ I was delighted to recently present Huntleigh Healthcare Limited with The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in recognition of its new range of digital handheld Dopplers and its outstanding performance in the field of innovation. It was a privilege to be shown around its Cardiff premises by Peter Cashin the Managing Director and to learn more about the company’s exciting and pioneering work and in particular to meet some of the staff who must be very proud of their achievements. The excellent presentations from staff and clinicians provided a further fascinating insight into the company and its work and I was pleased to note that the company is in the process of developing other world class products also. The company has demonstrated true excellence in what it does, providing inspiration for others. I wish Huntleigh Healthcare Limited continued success and I hope that the Queen’s Award for Enterprise will help to provide the company with new opportunities”. Innovative features in the new products help clinicians to make quicker and more accurate assessments providing benefits to both user and patient. Peter Cashin Managing Director spoke of how good design can improve patient care and clinical effectiveness “features we have introduced such as the high resolution colour display represent a first for handheld Dopplers. This allows clinicians to clearly see vascular waveforms as well as hear digital audio sounds. In the Fetal Heart Rate (FHR) version the FHR data is displayed in high visibility large numbers and recorded digitally as a waveform for archiving and review ” In his speech Ken Poole Head of Economic Development at Cardiff Council congratulated Huntleigh on its achievements, applauding the fact that ‘’ Huntleigh has been creating high quality job opportunities in south Cardiff for 40 years and we certainly hope from a Cardiff Council perspective they will continue to provide new sustainable employment opportunities for our local communities . The company is also a great example of a manufacturing business in our Capital City which has survived and thrived in the competitive global export market through the high quality design and manufacture of innovative products in the healthcare space ‘’. The event was also an ideal opportunity to present the Tenovus Cancer Care charity with £7500 raised through various activities involving all the staff at the site over the last year in recognition of the charities 75th birthday.
